Cottage pane

Cottage pane in Bizman is a type of drawing manipulation, where existing glazing openings are divided with cottage pane mullions vertically and horizontally, and are then glazed normally.

Mullions in Bizman

Any profile that is used to divide openings vertically or horizontally. So, Mullions and Transoms are just Vertical and Horizontal Mullions.

Cottage pane materials

You can draw cottage pane with any mullion, but because cottage pane mullions are narrower than standard mullions, you need a proper cottage pane mullion before you can quote on a cottage pane job with correct Glass and Bead sizes.

Cottage pane mullion

If you've already got the cottage pane mullion you need in your Bizman installation, you can jump to drawing cottage pane.

Bizman cottage pane mullion

If you don't have cottage pane mullions installed for the common systems from your current supplier, you can get started using the "BizmanExample-CottagePaneMullion 30.5' from the fictitious supplier "Bizman Examples Co.", and just substitute real world codes, prices and dimensions later.

The Bizman Supplier

Example materials from Bizman (We don't actually supply materials) have crazy high prices that makes Bizman treat them as "Price on application" (POA) items.

Inertias are just in the right "ball-park" and must be edited with the correct Ix value (mmm^4) of your real world profile.

To install the Bizman example cottage pane muiion, navigate to:

Location: System Admin -> Advanced Settings -> Drawing (tab)

At the very bottom of this tab, click the button "Load Example Materials" and click "Yes" and the example cottage pane mullion is installed and ready to use.

Drawing Cottage pane

Cottage pane always starts with an existing drawing (glazed or un-glazed) - e.g: bizman cottage pane existing drawing

Removing Existing Glazing

If this doesn't apply, continue to next section: "Dividing with Cottage pane mullion"

Select the glass you want to remove, here we've selected both fixed and Sash.
Right click for the popup menu and select "Clear Glass"

Dividing with Cottage pane mullion

You'll need to select the Cottage pane mullions to use for Vertical and Horizontal splits, either before or during the division process depending on what is currently selected as the Vertical and Horizontal dividing profiles.

Here we show how to select the "BizmanExample-CottagePaneMullion 30.5" before you start dividing, as this would not normally be selected as default by Bizman. bizman cottage pane selecting the dividing profiles

Select the openings you want to divide, here we selected both again. Right click for the popup menu and select "Equal splits vertically" or "Equal splits horizontally", depending on your preferrence for which mullions you want to go the full height or width of the openings.

Specify the number of openings you want to be created (we specified 3 vertical). bizman cottage pane divide vertically

Select the new openings and repeat the process with your equal Horizontal splits. bizman cottage pane divide horizontally

Notice that the 3 equal divisions of the Sash don't quite match the alignment of the fixed side, particularly in the horizontal.

If you're OK with this, you can finish now by selecting all the openings and installing fixed glazing. But, if you want to line them up, here's how you can do it.

Select any 2 misaligned horizontal profiles and click "Dimension" (just under the Undo/Redo buttons top right), and Bizman will store the vertical difference which you can use to adjust the Sash horizontal mullions to align with those on the fixed side. bizman cottage pane equalize horizontal openings1

Select a row of mullions that must move up, then right click for the popup menu and click on "Move up...". Notice that Bizman has suggested 7.7mm which in this case is the vertical difference between the Sash and Fixed horizontal mullions. bizman cottage pane equalize horizontal openings2

The top row of mullions in the Sash and fixed sides are now in-line. bizman cottage pane equalize horizontal openings3

Repeat the process for a row of mullions that must move down, and click "Move down..." in the popup menu". The end result looks like this with all horizontals aligned. bizman cottage pane equalize horizontal openings4

Finally, just select all openings as you would for any drawing and install the fixed glazing of your choice. The end result looks like this. bizman cottage pane glaze all openings

Additional Cottage Pane Materials

You may want to add special cross connectors for your Cottage pane drawing, where 2 horizontal Cottage pane mullions form a "Cross" when they line up around a vertical mullion (or vice-versa). Bizman has a powerful rules system called "Product Properties", that allows you to detect when this situation occurs in a drawing, and optionally add one or more materials at each occurence.

"Product Properties" is an advanced topic within Bizman, so, we won't go into detail in this guide, but here's the rule that can find the "Cross" mentioned above and assign 2 cross connectors per "Cross"
To access the Product Properties system, navigate to:

Location: System Admin -> Advanced Settings -> Drawing (tab) -> Product Properties

Below, you see 2 property rules that apply to Vertical and Horizontal scenarios and assign 2 cross connectors per "Cross". In the screen-shot...

Property Name = "Cross Connectors Cottage paneH 30.5"
This is Just a name that you create to organise the property rules and help you see when the rule has been applied in a drawing.

Add Property Basis = "BizmanExample-CottagePaneMullion 30.5(JoinPairInlineH)BizmanExample-CottagePaneMullion 30.5"
Where "(JoinPairInlineH)" is a built-in function to find all instances of product code/s on the left that are paired with product code/s on the right in a horizontal line.
"(JoinPairInlineV)" is the equivalent Vertical function.

Add Materials list = "2*CCP305|BLACK NYLON|NA describes the material that will be added to the drawing with every instance of the Property (Cross)
All materials in Bizman are descibed by Material Code / Type(Colour) / Variant - Here the 3 parts must be separated by the "pipe" symbol "|"

2*CCP305 means Quantity 2 of the material code "CCP305"
BLACK NYLON is the material Type
NA is the default material Variant (managed automatically by Bizman for most materials)

Product Property Rules

The top rule in the screen-shot is a normal rule in Bizman and shows how to structure a left and right list with real material codes.
The left list doesn't have to be the same as the right list e.g. when you want to identify mullions that butt against door stiles or outer frames etc.

Tip: Remember to click the "Save Changes" button, (bottom left) when working on "Add Materials" in the lower window.

Convert the Example code

Finally, to convert the example code to a real world code:
1: Find the example Cottage pane code in the Raw Materials screen, highlight it as below then type the real world code. eg.123456
Then edit the description and select a real Supplier. Save your work and click "Update Cache" (top right)

change cottage pane material code to real world code

after changing cottage pane material code to real world code

2: Edit and Save other details for the real world code such as Supplied Size and Inertias.

3: You will need to manually edit the Material code in the Product Properties screen from "BizmanExample-CottagePaneMullion 30.5' to "123456"

Note: You can always add back the Bizman Example code after the first example code has been renamed.

HAPPY COTTAGE PANING!
